Can Young People Get Serious Covid 19 Infection?

Since the start of the covid 19 pandemic, reports indicated that the virus mostly affects older generations with multiple medical comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes and heart disease and younger people are more likely to get the milder cases of covid 19 infection.

However, the United States Centres for Disease Control and Prevention says that more than 20% of the cases are younger people aged less than 30 years old. And a quarter of this figure are having serious covid 19 infections. This figure is recently on the upgoing trend as the virus started to spread even faster worldwide.

Thus, young people can catch the coronavirus eventhough are less likely to be hospitalized for the infectious disease. However, data supports that some people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s can develop serious signs and symptoms which last long enough especially if they are having other medical issues like obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure or known as hypertension.

Data from a recent study shows that more than 3000 adults who are aged between the 18s to 35s who catch the covid 19 virus became sick enough to get hospital care for their illness. From the figure, 21 percent of them were placed in the intensive care unit and 10 percent required special breathing machines for life support. Unfortunately, 2.7 percent from the number died due to serious covid 19 infection.

What Are the Risk Factors for Coronavirus in Young Adults?

1. Exposure to The Virus

This is the main risk factor as most of the young adults are currently working in jobs where major exposure can occur such as in restaurants, bars, public transportation and in the healthcare field. This increases the chance of them getting the coronavirus infection. Furthermore, most young adults are still pursuing their studies in colleges or universities where a small outbreak in these places can affect many people at once. Most of them are also involved as front liners doing volunteering jobs and deliveries across the country.

Besides, since less younger adults are getting serious coronavirus infection, this may cause them to develop false confidence about their health safety. They tend to ignore the standard operating procedures such as wearing masks regularly and maintaining  an appropriate social distance whenever needed.

2. Underlying Medical Comorbidities

It is reported that most young people who get the serious covid infection are from those suffering with other multiple medical comorbidities such as high cholesterol levels in blood, diabetes and having high blood pressure. It is said that these diseases reduced the efficacy of your immune system to fight against serious covid 19 infection. Therefore, equivalent care needs to be undertaken for those with these medical underlying diseases.

What Are the Precaution Steps to Be Taken by Young Adults?

As many young adults with covid 19 infection do not possess any serious symptoms, they tend to spread the virus to others unknowingly especially by those who are actively participating in jobs that require exposure to others. Thus, to prevent the spreading of this virus, vigilant precautionary steps need to be taken in order to control the wide spread.

Here are some of the easiest ways you can protect yourself and your closest one from the deadly coronavirus.

  1. Maintain a physical distance of at least 1 metre whenever you are in the public to avoid spreading of virus through air droplets.
  2. Always wear a 3 ply mask regularly whenever you are outside and also change them daily.
  3. Do not go out of the house unnecessarily.
  4. Get yourself and your closest one vaccinated with corona virus vaccine as this is the ultimate solution for the coronavirus infection.
